Little Known Honor for Winslow's Dick Farley:  Submitted by Hugh Schaefer, Basketball Historian, who has often provided this website with interesting basketball stories :  Back in 1949 and 1950 when Winslow and Terre Haute had outstanding teams, with  outstanding players, Winslow's Dick Farley, and Terre Haute having outstanding twins, Arley and Harley Andrews.  All of Indiana knew about these three outstanding players.  Four years later in 1954, there was a family that lived west of Farmersburg, IN in Sullivan county, Mr. & Mrs. Carter Drake. and also basketball fans that had triplet boys. who named their three triplets, FARLEY (for Dick Farley); ARLEY (for Arley Andrews), and HARLEY (for Harley Andrews).  Winslow and Farmersburg were in the 1954 regional but did not play each other.   This was a pretty big deal to have a baby named after you in this manner.  Sixty years ago this year.  Dick Farley was an alumni of Winslow High School in 1950 and also played basketball for IU and the Detroit Pistons.

WHS Alumni Scholarship Recipient for 2014 Announced
Tanner Brooks has been selected as recipient for the Winslow High School Alumni Scholarship for 2014.  Tanner plans to attend IUPUI and major in political science.  The Winslow High School Alumni Association is making a difference in Pike County by their commitment to post secondary education and to the future of Pike County.

We welcome Rose Beyke of Winslow as part of the team for this website.  Rose's e-mail is:  rosebeyke@gmail.com  She is joining our efforts to provide some new changes to this website.  Actually for two reasons - 1 to keep the website going when I am no longer able to do it and 2 - hoping to expand it or as I like to think " Moving It Forward Into The Present.

We will continue with emphasis on Winslow Alumni, but that only went thru 1974 and NOW with Pike Central, we will continue it to the present and the future.

Next year in 2015 Pike Central will celebrate 40 years as a consolidated school.  In a short period, we hope to be placing some Pike Central Charger pictures on the web site and hope to inspire PC Alumni to follow the website and enjoy seeing the old photos.

Many PC graduates and students come from parents, grandparents, aunts & uncles, brothers & sisters of Winslow Alumni.

We also hope to attract all people of Pike County to become interested in our new direction.

With Rose Beyke, joining me, it is hoped to be able to extend the website further and into the future to keep it growing.

At times we will be displaying old photos from the past of WHS and Winslow on this opening page of the website. We have a new phone number.  You can reach us at:  812-455-6998 or by e-mail at:

New story on things from the past - Laura Mae Davis Burlingame, is on display at the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. Behind is a Marine uniform like one Jones, who died in the bloody assault on a Japanese-held island during World War II, would have worn. Before Jones died, he wrote what he called his “last life request” to anyone who might find his diary: Please give it to Laura Mae Davis, the girl he loved. Laura Mae Davis Burlingame _ she married an Army Air Corps man in 1945 _ had given the diary to Jones, and didn’t know it had survived him until visiting the museum on April 24. Both Laura Davis Burlingame and Tommy Jones were graduates of Winslow High School, Class of 1941.  See the full story by following this link: Laura Davis Burlingame and diary of Tommy Jones, Winslow Indiana
